A517 Grade A is a quenched and tempered high-strength alloy steel plate designed for fusion-welded pressure vessels, boilers, and highly stressed structural assemblies. The grade provides a minimum yield strength of 690 MPa with dependable toughness, supporting reduced wall thickness and weight savings in pressure-containing components. It is commonly used in pressure vessels, penstocks, hydraulic equipment, and heavy structural applications where a high strength-to-weight ratio is critical.

Chemical Composition (ASTM A517/A517M)
Carbon: 0.15–0.21%
Manganese: 0.80–1.10%
Silicon: 0.40–0.80%
Chromium: 0.50–0.80%
Molybdenum: 0.18–0.28%
Zirconium: 0.05–0.15%
Boron: ≤ 0.0025%
Phosphorus: ≤ 0.035%
Sulfur: ≤ 0.035%
The Cr-Mo-B alloy system delivers deep hardenability and high strength after quenching and tempering.

Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength: 795–930 MPa
Yield Strength: ≥ 690 MPa
Elongation: ≥ 16% (50 mm gauge length)
These values support safe operation in welded pressure vessels and boilers under high stress.

Size Range (Website 5 Standard Template)
Thickness: 3–32 mm
